From 1881 to 1898, six brothers were born in Voghera, in the province of Pavia, where their father, Rodolphe Maserati, was a railwayman: Carlo, Bindo, Alfieri, Mario, Ettore and Ernesto. With the exception of Mario, who will choose painting, all will devote themselves to mechanics. Carlo works first at Fiat, then at Isotta-Fraschini, Bianchi and finally at Junior, when he dies in 1910. Engaged at the age of 18 by Isotta-Fraschini, Alfieri asserts himself as a technician and as a pilot. Leader of the siblings, he will be joined at the big Milan manufacturer by Bindo and Ettore.
In December 1914, while Italy has not yet entered the war, Alfieri Maserati starts his own business. In the company of Ettore and Ernesto (Bindo staying at Isotta-Fraschini), he created in Bologna a workshop specialized in the sports preparation of Isotta-Fraschini engines. The “Societa Anonima Officine Alfieri Maserati” was born. In the aftermath of the world conflict, Alfieri acquires a new workshop in the suburbs of Bologna, in the place called Ponte Vecchio. He regularly takes part in sporting events, particularly at the wheel of the 6.3-liter Isotta-Fraschini Tipo Speciale, at the wheel of which he won the Suse-Mont-Cenis hill race in 1921 and 1922.
